If you were over the age of 5-years old, 40-years ago today, then you probably remember exactly where you were... Me.. I was 14-years old. My Dad had gotten transferred to Mobile, Alabama that year.... I sat with my Dad and sister in our den, watching the moon landing... with Walter Cronkite on the TV. We didn't have cable or satellite back then... just an antenna on the roof and rabbit ears on the TV set.
We sat and watched in awe... We had finally achieved President Kennedy's dream... 5 years after his assassination. A man on the moon... now that was really something!
Remembering history... and where I was... 40-years ago today... down here in French Lique...

ReplyDeleteAnd Walter...didn't he past away the other day? He was a class mate of my FIL...I am sure they are talking it all over right now.

ReplyDeleteI was almost 4 years old at the time. My mom was taking a class and her aunt was babysitting me. We watched it in the garage turned family room because it was the only place kids were really allowed. The rest of the house was like a museum. I don't remember much about the telecast because I was too worried about getting in trouble for touching something in that house!
I miss Walter Conkrite.

We were glued to the television, and I can still hear Walter Cronkite's voice announcing this amazing journey. I was 9. My little brother was a NASA obsessed 6 year old. I think my sister watched because she had too lol. Thanks for the memory. Kathy
ReplyDeleteMorning Dixie, I remember 40 years ago and I was a little older than 14.....It was a momentous occassion, when they announced the landing on the moon.

ReplyDeleteI was at a good friend's house, and we watched it with her parents after swimming all day in her pool. It was incredbily exciting... the moon walk AND the swimming (our boyfriends had come over). ;-)

ReplyDeleteI remember Kennedy's assassination too. I told my mother the president was dead and she said I shouldn't say that. I told her that's what they said on the TV. She sat down and cried.

I was on a plane going to Hawaii to meet my husband who was coming in for RandR from Vietnam. We went down to Pearl Harbor to see them land after they were plunked out of the ocean.

Just beautiful. 40 years ago I would have been 12, and to be honest I have no idea where I was, but I would venture to say Moma had us in front of the TV watching as she would say it was history in the making, and we needed to watch. ReplyDeleteYikes, I was already 13 yrs old that long ago. Hard as I might, I remember watching the TV and footage of the moonwalk, but do not know if I was at home or at my grandparents farm in Floresville.

I vividly remember watching that news cast....I was 10 years old at the time. It was awesome and a memory I'll never forget.

It was breathtaking and to think this event was 40 years ago (I was 14 also)! I also thought for certain, in the second millennium, we'd be driving something that looked quite different than a four-wheeled vehicle... but we do have cell phones and wireless internet... it's an incredible time to be alive!

ReplyDeleteI am so sorry I haven't visited in so many days--I know you realize what has been happening in our lives--no computer time when babysitting the 3yr old and my heart was so sad for so many days when our gr.son was in the hospital. HOWEVER, we saw him Sat. evening and he looked great. Our son called last night and we could hear a healthy "I'm hungry cry" coming over the phone. My DIL's family is visiting this week, so I'm staying out of their way---for now! :)
I so loved catching up on your posts! Ah, I'm sorry little Romeo didn't get to visit--he looks like he could be a "whole lot of fun" to have around the house!! Your okra post reminded me so much of my mom. She always raised it and I used to LOVE it when she would fry it up for us. I don't think she ever froze it, however, she just used it in season. Nope, now I recall she did "pickle" okra, too! I can hardly wait to see the new H.Potter movie! I see you and Candy are great "junkers" just like Bonnie and I are---I'm always making her pose in a hat when we're at a mall. She always looks so cute in them, but when she gets a picture of me, well, I look like a "bag lady"!

Dixie, what a beautiful photo that is. I also remember watching in the den with my mother and sister. It was less than a month until my wedding, so I almost felt like it was some kind of sign that my husband and I would be happy. I think I was right! laurie

ReplyDeleteI remember how exciting and amazing it was, and how proud were were of our astronauts and the entire space program! I also remember my great-uncle being one of those people (and there were a surprising number of them!) who thought the whole thing was a hoax -- he was convinced it was staged and filmed in the desert out west somewhere!
