When a book or series of books becomes so popular as to cause a virtual frenzy, I try to stay away... think Harry Potter... but peer pressure (every one discussing the book they've read) eventually draws me in... I admit to having read the entire Harry Potter Series to date...
Now enter Twilight. I know... I know... I have fought the raging river of popularity for 3-years...but was finally pulled under... I found the first book in the series at a thrift store... I have difficulty passing up a good bargain on a book...
Now, perhaps, you're wondering what I think about this book. I understand the fervor over Twilight. It's a good story, well told by an author, Stephenie Meyer, that knows how to write. Writing in a first person narrative, Ms. Meyer does a wonderful job describing and defining her characters. Now, while some of the story is way out there (it is a fantasy love story about a vampire), it's spirits you along with the characters... mainly Bella (from whose perspective we read) and Edward, her vampire Romeo.

A good fairytale fantasy for sophisticated (mature) readers...
Enjoying the fairytale, down here in French Lique...
I have to admit that fantasy has never had much appeal for me. When I taught English, a lot of my students read the Tolkein books for book reports. I just couldn't get into them.
ReplyDeleteI read the first Harry Potter. It was okay, but it didn't grab me.
I've heard about the "Twilight" rage, but I just don't think I'm interested. However, maybe I should take a cue from you and try it.
Welcome to the club....it is fun!
ReplyDeleteMornin', Dixie...
ReplyDeleteOh, yes...I think we all love a good fairy tale and Twilight is one of them. I haven't read the book...too busy on this blasted machine...but I saw the first movie with grands and, expecting to be goofy, I was pleasantly surprised. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed it very much..and the grands ? Well, when we walked out, the oldest one, 12, said, "Well, Memaw, I think I am in LOVE!" :)
My sister read the entire Twilight series. She talked me into reading the first book. My problem? I was just getting into the Mitford Series by Jan Karon when I picked up Twilight. Ick. I could appreciate the characters and writing in Twilight. But, I was ready to get back to the maturity and realistic Mitford the minute I finished that first Twilight. Funny. I, like you, resisted for quite some time. Will you read the next book? ~Mindy
ReplyDeleteRofl.NOT only did I resist for three yrs but I actually criticized grown woman for reading "teenager crap". Yeah, I was pretty nasty about it.
ReplyDeleteUntil... I saw the movie and then that very night ran out to buy not just the first book but all of them.
In two weeks time I had read the entire series. I'm hooked and in love with Edward.
Oh well, what can I say!
I enjoyed Twilight, but NOT Harry Potter, so your instincts are still good.
ReplyDeleteHubby read both Harry and Twilight - - - me, not so much.
ReplyDeleteOh, but I DO read - - - I love Bodie Thoene, Jan Karon, W. Dale Cramer, and others!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter read all the Twilight book and loved them. I read to page 13 of the first one. My daughter is annoyed I didn't read it. I guess its not my genre, but I did watch the movie with her.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it. You held out a long time.

All my DIL's have read the whole series and saw the movie, I must admit I haven't but am planning on giving it a try...I love fantasy, even though my Niece tells me I'm letting the Devil into my life by reading it. I believe we are old enough to know the difference in real and fantasy.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it. I didn't read the Harry Potter books, but did enjoy all of the movies.

I resisted the Harry Potter series also. But then I decided to try it, as I was impressed with anything that could get kids to read. And I'm glad I did. I'm not usually one for the fantasy genre, but the story hooked me from the get go and I was totally able to suspend disbelief. And I still want to see a quiddich match lol. Haven't decided to try this one yet, but our reading lists are very similar so I think I might give it a try on your recommendation. Thanks! Kathy
ReplyDeleteI such a long list of books that I want to read. I've seen people who cannot pull themselves away from Twilight, so I'm afraid to get started. Thanks for the review. laurie
