Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. All churches that have a continuous history extending before AD 1500 observe Lent.
As I am a Catholic, I observe Lent. Our Parish Priest encourages us to observe Lent by both giving up something (indulgences) and doing something for others (kindnesses). Each year, I try to do both. Another factor of the "giving up" during Lent, is that it is not appropriate to advertise to others what it is that you are giving up. It tends to diminish the purpose and to give adoration to oneself. I hope this post does neither...
Since I'm an avid blog poster, I thought it only fair to let you know that I'm reducing my blogging time to make way for other, more spiritual endevors that I've allowed to go by the wayside. I'll be here posting on Wordless Wednesday, and will continue to post weekly at my other blog, "So, God... Are You Listening?" Please feel free to comment here at anytime for either blog. See you on Wednesdays, Sundays and here and there until Easter. Have a blessed 40 Days of Lent.
See you soon down here in French Lique... Dixie
Thanks, a gentle reminder of what's really important!!! Linda

ReplyDeleteMy local priest will be proud of you! I'm a catholic myself and because of your post, it seals my choice of giving up a guilty pleasure for the next 40 days.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, thanks for leaving me a comment!

Hi Dixie,
ReplyDeleteI have never been associated with a church that observed Lent but I can see it can be a good thing. I think your Priest's advice is good. I read your spiritual blog and thought it was very good. I'm glad you are sharing with us on Spiritual Sundays.
Blessings,
Charlotte
Dixie, what a beautiful post..I believe God is listening.. I'm sorry I'm so late in getting back around.. and look at when I could here you posted this.. a reason for everything huh? ReplyDeleteDixie, Sounds like we're all getting a healthy perspective of the balance needed in Blog Land. Many of us have been talking about this just this week! I too am slowing down my participation., but will remain with you on Wordless Wednesdays! I also keep another blog., http://www.stayintheday.blogspot.com It was my first one, and I still post...the Blog was God inspired and I only post on it when I feel led too...so different from my teacup blog. ;) To avoid confusion since I mostly visit from my teacup blog., I don't show the Stay In The Day blog under my profile. But, that one is also more freeing... You be blessed...and I will always come back to visit me lady, whether you post daily......once a week...or once a month... ;) ~CC Catherine
